Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a type of housing arrangement and support service provided to individuals who require some level of assistance to live independently.

SIL programs aim to empower individuals to live as independently as possible in their own homes or in community-based settings, while still receiving the necessary support and assistance they need.

The level of support provided can vary depending on the individual’s needs and abilities. Assistance provided to a participant will be included as part of their plan depending on the level of support they require to live independently in the housing option of their choice.

Types of Supported Independent Living Programs

The types of support offered in a Supported Independent Living program can include:

  • Accommodation:
    Assistance in finding and maintaining suitable housing, whether it’s an individual apartment, a shared house, or a group home.
  • Personal care:
    Help with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, grooming, meal preparation, and managing medications.
  • Household management:
    Support in managing household tasks like cleaning, laundry, shopping, and budgeting.
  • Life skills training:
    Teaching and developing essential life skills such as cooking, cleaning, managing finances, using public transportation, and accessing community resources.
  • Social and community integration:
    Encouraging participation in social activities, connecting with community services, and fostering relationships with peers, neighbors, and community members.
  • Emotional support:
    Providing guidance, counseling, and emotional support to help individuals cope with daily challenges and develop their self-confidence and self-advocacy skills.
